Set a SMART Goal with a Compelling Outcome

To begin:

  1. State your goal in positive terms. Describe the outcome in terms of what you want rather than what you don't want.
  2. Describe your goal in sensory based words. How will you know when you have reached your desired outcome? What will you see, hear, and feel when you have it?
  3. Is your goal testable and measurable?
  4. Is your goal congruent? Is it in alignment with your highest good and your values? Does it create a win-win for all involved?
  5. Is your desired outcome SMART?
  • Specific : Identifies exactly what you want?

  • Measurable: Quantifies your outcomes – how much, what size?

  • Acceptable and Agreed: Acceptable to you in body, mind and spirit? If anyone else is involved, do they agree?

  • Realistic: Can you accomplish the outcome if you make a reasonable stretch?

  • Time targeted: Does it designate a target date for completion?

Example for a man: “In 42 days, I stride into my office wearing size 34” pants, feeling alert and powerful. My staff comments that I not only look ten years younger, but my attitude toward them makes them grateful we all work together.”

Example for a woman : “In 42 days, I glide into my office, wearing a new size six dress, and glance at the exotic flowers my staff has sent for my graduation from boot camp. When I walk into the lunchroom, there are cards from everyone in the office saying how happy they are to see me looking and feeling so happy and vibrant.”

Helpful Exercise: Review the two examples above to see if you can find what is specific , measurable , acceptable , realistic and time targeted ? Is anything missing? How would you upgrade these goals for someone? Hint: If the person wanted to fit into a pants or dress that was one or two sizes smaller, the goal would be realistic, but not if it was ten sizes. Often we know the goal was truly acceptable to ourselves because we have kept our word and followed through.

Practice: Make this goal setting process part of your daily life. Have fun setting outcomes and SMART goals. Find ways to turn your random thoughts into SMART goals. It is empowering. Become relaxed about it, this can become as natural as breathing.
